In the 1700s, several Spanish galleons shipwrecked in the Martin County area of Florida's Treasure Coast. The multiple wrecks were reportedly the result of a hurricane, and the ships were carrying unknown quantities of gold and silver. Some of this treasure has since been recovered. The Treasure Coast area that became Stuart was first settled by non-Native Americans in 1870. In 1875, a United States Lifesaving Station was established on Florida's Hutchinson Island, near the Stuart area. I'm quite surprised that the "decorations" on this horse have not been "appropriated" by local vandals. Hopefully, the bad guys will leave this beautiful horse alone.
Within minutes of the posting, Scott's Facebook page was filled with dozens of comments. Some people praised the state's weather and the lack of a state income tax as a reason to move to Florida.
Republicans prepared to sacrifice numbers in redistricting battle

TALLAHASSEE -- Florida’s new redistricting standards, coupled with the 10-year shift in population, has forced Republicans to do what is rarely done in politics — sacrifice incumbents – and that is not going over well with some Republicans.
The possible casualties include U.S. Rep. Allen West, whose Broward to Palm Beach-based district would become more Democratic in every map proposed by both the House and Senate.

ARLINGTON, Texas — For coach Bill Snyder’s second Wildcat turnaround and 11th-ranked Kansas State’s surprising season, the Cotton Bowl is an appropriate ending.
When the Wildcats first played in the Cotton Bowl 15 years ago, that New Year’s Day game was a watershed moment for a program that had evolved from consecutive winless seasons just before Snyder arrived. They went again at the end of the 2000 season, during a stretch of six 11-win seasons in seven years before the coach’s brief retirement.
Broncos sport NFL's top ground game but TDs rare

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos boast the best running game in the NFL. The numbers are a bit deceiving, though. They pile up yards on the ground but not points.
The Broncos led the league with a 164.5-yard average and set a franchise mark with 2,632 yards rushing. Yet, they ran for just 11 touchdowns, including six by scrambling quarterback Tim Tebow and four by resurgent running back Willis McGahee.
State report card on St. Johns County high schools: 2 A's, 4 B's

Two of St. Johns County’s high schools were down a letter grade as the state released the annual high school grade report for the 2010-11 school year on Wednesday.
Despite the drop, the school district kept its No. 1 ranking in the state based on FCAT scores.
Top performances by the high schools make them vulnerable to three automatic triggers that are tied to subpopulations of students, said Superintendent Joe Joyner after the scores were released Wednesday by the state Department of Education.
Improving habitat for wildlife

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission biologists Rio Throm, center, and Justin Ellenberger monitor a controlled burn Thursday at the north end of Guana River Management Area, off County Road 210 in Ponte Vedra Beach, in the first photo.
The 22-acre prescribed fire is the first of 15,000 acres that the commission plans to burn this year.
‘We try to burn every 24 to 36 months,’ said Ellenberger. ‘One of the reasons we burn is to make the habitat better for the wildlife, and [we] will have a harder time burning during wildfire season,’ he said.
Proctor: Merit pay on track

Statewide resistance by superintendents of schools, school boards, teachers and teachers unions will not derail the Florida Legislature’s implementation of Senate Bill 736, a law mandating teacher merit pay, state Rep. Bill Proctor, R-St. Augustine, said Thursday.
SB 736, titled the “Student Success Act,” passed last year and was signed into law by Gov. Rick Scott in March.
It connected teacher raises to student performance and ended the tenure system.
Crews to dig up backyards for TV show, raising objections from city archaeologist

A reality TV show set to film in St. Augustine soon is already raising some concern within the city limits.
A casting producer for a 13-episode series tentatively titled “The Recovery Project” is to fly here Sunday to find property on which to dig for clues to the past.
Desiree Mandelbaum says the digs are essentially treasure hunting, a search for objects like bullets or buttons that will tell a story of the past.
Woman killed in crash

An Edgewater woman who worked at a St. Augustine car dealership died after an accident Thursday morning in Volusia County, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.
Christina Price, 35, was driving on New York Avenue when she lost control of her Toyota, the report said. Her car went off the roadway and struck a pole. Rescue officials transported Price to Halifax Medical Center, but she died a couple of hours later, said Sgt. Kim Montes, public information officer with the Florida Highway Patrol.
Fla. Legislature could wrap up session early

TALLAHASSEE — Florida lawmakers are supposed to return to the Capitol next week to start a 60-day session, and already leaders are divided over how and when to address the state’s nearly $2 billion budget shortfall.
Senate President Mike Haridopolos said Thursday that he remains worried that the state’s finances are fluctuating and that lawmakers may have a vote on a new budget until later this year.
Teacher of the year, rookie teacher nominees announced

Nominees for the 2011-12 St. Johns County teacher of the year and rookie teacher of the year honors have been announced by the school district.
Each of the district’s schools names its own teacher and rookie teacher, with the overall winners announced during a banquet on Feb. 9. The St. Johns County Education Foundation sponsors the banquet to recognize excellence in the teaching profession.
The individual nominees will be presented to the District School Board at the board meeting Tuesday at 40 Orange St.

State attorney has 10 days to give specifics on Jones charge

The office of the state attorney has until Jan. 14 to file the particulars in its charge against City of St. Augustine Commissioner Errol Jones that he tampered with a witness, according to a court order signed Wednesday by County Court Judge Alexander Christine.
Jones had been charged with resisting an officer without violence after an Oct. 22 incident involving a reported assault between two women about 11:30 p.m. at 60 Julia St.

My mama always said, “New Year’s’ resolutions are just things you say. Hopes and Dreams, that’s the stuff a new year is made of.”
As we all know, mama was always right. But before we look forward, I thought we should take a look in the rearview mirror and see how we fared with last year.
This time last year I wrote: I am starting a low-fat, low-calorie, low-taste diet; I will get up at 5 a.m. every day and do Pilates and cardio for two hours. Well I did! It lasted two days. Mama really was right about those resolutions.

Life Training Institute president keynote speaker for Jan. 14 march

“Never Let Go of Life” will be the theme Jan. 14, when the annual March of Life is staged in St. Augustine. Keynote speaker will be Scott Klusendorf, president of Life Training Institute. Last year 2,000 people came from throughout Florida and South Georgia to participate.
This year’s event includes a 10 a.m. concert by Christian recording artists Above Gray Skies performing at the Great Cross on the grounds of the Mission of Nombre de Dios. Pro-life information booths will be located there, as well. Speakers continue with inspirational stories at 11 a.m.
Sheriff's Office seeks suspect in Ponte Vedra Beach burglaries

At least one male suspect is being sought in connection with the burglary of four Ponte Vedra Beach businesses in the early morning hours of Nov. 30, according to a report from the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.
